Course de contrôle – Driving test

The consequences of failing a driving test can be very dire (and it happens more than we imagine). That’s why we do our utmost to help you prepare in the best way possible.
To find out if you need to take a driving test, please browse to the countries list of the Service des Automobiles.

1 • COMPLETE THE STUDENT DRIVER FORM

Download the PDF version of the Student Driver Form. You can find it on the Services des Automobiles homepage.

Alternatively you can go to the Service des Automobiles (Av. du Grey 110, 1014 Lausanne) to get it.

Fill in the form and take your photographs. The part with the eye test will be completed by an optician.

2 • EYE TEST

Take the student driver form to any optician (Visilab/Fielmann/etc). Usually their reps speak English and the eye test costs 20 CHF. They will fill out the eye test section for you on the form. Make sure you sign with black ink. (30-40.-)

3 • CONTROLE DES HABITANTS

Take the completed form to the Contrôle des Habitants of your town. Just give them the form and they will stamp it. The stamp usually costs 20 CHF.

4 • SERVICES DES AUTOMOBILES

Now its time to take all your documents to the Services des Automobiles in Lausanne. Make sure you have the following documents:

  • Completed Student Driver Form
  • ID Photo
  • Original driver’s license
  • Swiss residency permit
  • Contrôle des habitants

They will keep your original driver’s license and issue you an authorisation letter that allows you to drive in Switzerland and Lichtenstein (if you are planning on travelling in the next few weeks/months, you can request to keep that license until the day of your exam).
